Ruby Stokes Henderson Sutherlan, of Fort Worth, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2007. VISITATION will be held 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday April 6, 2007 at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. FUNERAL services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday April 7, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Groesbeck with Rev. Clayton Griggs and Rev. Walt Stokes officiating. Burial will follow in Faulkenberry Cemetery. Ruby Fay was born November 2, 1915 in Shiloh, Texas to Roy Hearne and Hester (Tibbs) Stokes. She attended Mexia schools and Baylor University. Some of Ruby’s great passions were her grandchildren, great grandchildren, watching the Texas Rangers baseball team and Dallas Cowboys on television. She also enjoyed playing cards and Bingo with her friends almost every night at the Wellington Retirement Home in Fort Worth, where she lived the last nine years to be close to her family. Ruby worked at the prisoner of war camp in Mexia during World War II. She also worked in Joe Thomas’s grocery business before working for the Federal Farmer’s Home Administration in Groesbeck and Waco. After retiring as Postmaster in Groesbeck, she was manager of the Chamber of Commerce and sold real estate in the Groesbeck area. Ruby was elected to the Groesbeck school board while her children were in school. She was also active in the First Baptist Church and Woman’s Club. She and her husband, Joe Thomas Henderson, owned and operated Henderson’s Tom Thumb grocery store. After Joe’s death in 1966, she married George Sutherlan of Mexia and they were in the ranching and cattle business in Groesbeck for many years. Ruby Fay is preceded in death by her parents and husbands Joe T. Henderson and George Sutherlan, infant son, James William Haynes, Jr., son Billy Roy Henderson and daughter-in-law Mary Ruth Henderson, grandson Jesse Henderson and five brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Jo Henderson Holcomb of Fort Worth; brother Glyn Stokes and wife Bennie of Ennis, TX; three grandchildren Debbie Weldon of Fort Worth, Don Weldon and wife Kenita of Fort Worth, Pamela Miller and husband Scott of Humble, TX; seven great grandchildren, Jeremy Weldon Goss, Brittney Marie Weldon, Jamie Don Weldon and Brian Patrick Garrett all of Fort Worth, Matthew and Paul Miller of Humble, TX, Alissa Garrett Guizar of Arlington; two great great grandchildren Aiden and Aaron Guizar of Arlington; numerous nieces and nephews.
