Donald “Don” Morris Henderson, of Old Union-Lake Limestone, passed away Friday, October 21, 2011, at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, at age 78. Visitation will be Monday, October 24, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at the Old Union Church (located at the cemetery), with Brother Richard Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Nowak, Chase Nowak, Logan Nowak, Randy Henderson, Steve Henderson, and Scott Buchanan. Don was born December 25, 1932, to Oscar Lee Henderson and Mary Edith (Yarbrough) Henderson at Old Union, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Thornton High. Don served in the U. S. Army, stationed in the states during the Korean War conflict. He was united in marriage with Elna Lois Crabb in Groesbeck in 1962. He had been employed by Cameron Iron Works, living in Houston and Huntsville, and worked there for eleven years. Don and Lois then moved to Old Union around 1970. Don worked as a machinist for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for several years. Don had enjoyed duck hunting on the Navasota River since he was a young boy. He was a cattleman, though he lost some of his pastures when Lake Limestone was developed right where he was living. He built a new career around the lake by opening a store and campground near his home at the Lake Limestone Crossing, and continued ranching on other land. Don was a musician, who played the guitar and harmonica and sang at the same time, for his pleasure and sometimes with the local Gene Cox group. Don shared his love of music with his family, and gave his treasured 1950 guitar to his son-in-law, who was encouraged in playing by Don. Don’s daughter was his pride and joy, and he was totally crazy about his two grandsons. Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Bobby Lee Henderson, James “Pete” Henderson, and Rex Allen Henderson. He is survived by his wife, Lois Henderson of Lake Limestone; daughter and son-in-law, LaDonna and Chris Nowak of Groesbeck; grandsons, Chase Nowak and Logan Nowak of Groesbeck; brother, Glen Henderson of San Saba; sister and brother-in-law, Deloras and Jerry Don Perry of Austin; and brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Jean Henderson of Streetman.
