Bob was born April 20, 1922 to Johnnie L. Grimes and Eugie Mattie (Burleson) Grimes at Box Church. He grew up there, attending grammer school at Box Church, and graduating from Groesbeck High School in 1939. Bob entered the U. S. Air Force in 1942, serving in the states during World War II as an airplane engine mechanic. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he went to work for the State of Texas Highway Department, working in Limestone and surrounding counties in the engineering department until his retirement on July 31, 1977. Having a young son to put through college, Bob began a second career with Navasota Valley Electric Cooperative as a line surveyor, and worked there until retiring ten years later. For many years, Bob lived in the house on the top of Red Hill, where he raised and trained many horses. He had a passion and talent that exceeded the ordinary in training his horses, and he raised his son Randy riding a horse. Bob was united in marriage with Wilma Lyman in Groesbeck on August 21, 1991 and they moved into Groesbeck where they lived the rest of his life. When he moved to town, his passion in life changed from horses to trying his luck with the lottery; he was well known as the “Scratch-off” man with his new hobby. And then, after the grandchildren were born, his passion transferred from horses and scratch-off tickets to the grandchildren. He was a Baptist. Bob was well-known in Groesbeck and a friend to all. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joe Grimes; and a nephew, Johnny Grimes. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Grimes of Groesbeck; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Christina Grimes of San Antonio; granddaughter, Libby Grimes and grandson, Caden Grimes of San Antonio; niece, Sherry Hunt and husband Steve Hunt of Groesbeck; grand nephews, Justin Grimes and wife Dixy of Donie and J.J. Thomas and wife Jennifer of Buffalo; grand niece, Sara Ward and husband James of Mexia; and several great-grand nieces and nephews; stepson, Basil Carey and his children, Chad Carey and Logan Carey of Edmond, OK; stepson, Brian Carey and wife Tina and their children, Ryan Carey and Robbie Carey of Middletown, CA; and other extended family.
