Tommy Gene Ticknor, of Old Union, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013, at Parkview Hospital in Mexia. He was 65. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 20, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Richard Williams of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Sherrod, Wally Sherrod, Kevin Sherrod, J. R. Clark, Rick Long, and Bryce Sherrod. Tommy was born on March 30, 1947 to J. D. Ticknor and Ruby Lucile (Roberts) Ticknor, in the Mesquite community near Groesbeck. He attended some of his high school years in Groesbeck while living with his grandparents, and graduated from Cy-Fair High School in 1966. He was soon drafted into the U. S. Army, and served during 1967 in Vietnam. He also was stationed some of his service time in Frankfort, Germany. Tommy spent most of his life doing farm and ranch work, with working with animals being his passion in life. Tommy was united in marriage with Billie Sharon Nettles thirty-five years ago, and they have lived in the Old Union area. He has worked the last few years as a security guard for the power plant. In his free time, he loved coon hunting, and raised coon dogs all his life; he also loved to fish. He served as a volunteer fireman for West Lake Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Betty Ann Lenox and brother-in-law, Jimmy Lenox; brother-in-law, Joe Lincecum; step-brother, Reagan Calhoun; and step-granddaughter, Jessica Blair. He is survived by his wife, Billie Sharon Ticknor; step-children: Wally and Diane Sherrod of Oletha; Lesley and Rick Long of Oklahoma; Danny and Wendy Sherrod of Lake Limestone; Keith and Kay Sherrod of Groesbeck; and Kevin Sherrod of Thornton. There are also ten step-grandchildren: Will Clark, Sheena Cook, Layne Sherrod, Chris Sherrod, Derrick Sherrod, Cody Sherrod, Chyenne Sherrod, Shanea Zurcher, Chase Zurcher, and Bryce Sherrod; and seven step-great grandchildren: Julian Clark, Christian Clark, Shaylee Thomason, Brayleigh Thomason, Addison Reed, Grayson Sherrod, and Jayce Zurcher. Also left behind are his brothers, Rex Ticknor and wife Vicky, and Danny Ray Ticknor and wife Linda; and sisters, Linda Hibbs, Carolyn Cavaness and husband Pierre, and Lorene Ticknor; stepbrother, Jamie Calhoun and wife Bessie; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Martha and Red Martin, Jean Nettles, Jo and Stanley Boyd, Perry and Karen Nettles, and Pat Lincecum; and many nieces and nephews.
