Erna Irene Slaughter of Groesbeck passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 at the Marlin Hospital at age 71. Visitation will be Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Lee Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Eutaw Cemetery near Kosse, TX. Pallbearers will be James Freeman, James McCaleb, Michael McCaleb, Ricky Welch, Gary Hawkins and Zach Reece. Erna was born January 12, 1942 to George Harvey McCaleb and Sophia Etta (Ingel) McCaleb. She attended Kosse schools. Erna was united in marriage with Rex Slaughter on March 19, 1972. During her lifetime, she was employed at various jobs in and around the Marlin area, including the Elmwood Nursing Home in Marlin. She attended the Christ of Christ in Kosse until her health kept her away. Erna had a great love of music and reading. Her library of books was extensive. She was a loving and caring person. It was no surprise to find her yard full of happy, playing children. Family gatherings were a special treat for Erna, and she always tried to cook favorite dishes for her family members and the neighborhood children. Mrs. Slaughter was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra “Sandi” and Jay Smith of Wilderville; a son and daughter-in-law Michael and Michelle Slaughter of Mexia; seven grandchildren: Chris and Ashley Mercer of Temple; Robert Sumner of Rosebud; Thor Sumner of Camp Pendleton, CA; Kasey Slaughter of Onalaska, TX; Marisa and Woody Lawson of Rodgers; Aaron Childs of Mexia; and Zachary and Dalton Reece of Mexia; and one great grandchild, Gracie Sumner of Groesbeck.
