Patsy Jane Johnston, of the Ben Hur community, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 18, 2014. She was 82. Patsy was born April 23, 1931 in Green Pond, Texas (near Sulphur Springs) to Olvis Putman and Maureen (Hatch) Putman. She graduated from school there, and attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, studying nutrition. In college, she met her future husband and that changed her college plans. Patsy was united in marriage with Elwood Johnston in Denton in May 1949. In intending to get away from the farm, Patsy chose Roswell, New Mexico for their future home. Roswell was their home for the next thirty years, where he worked and they raised their daughter. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi while living there and a member of the Methodist church. In the late seventies, they moved back to the family farm in Ben Hur to take care of his parents. She was his helpmate in carrying on the farming operations until her health problems in the past three years. Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 64 years, Elwood Johnston, who recently passed away in December 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Douglass of Ben Hur; granddaughter, Jennifer Jones of Amarillo; great granddaughter, Caysi Jones and great grandson, Gavin Jones of Amarillo; brothers, Jerry Putman and James Putman of Dallas; and cousin, Louise Brogitti of Aldeo.
