Bessie M. Thomason, formerly of Groesbeck, passed away at Round Rock, TX. on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at age 88. Funeral services will be held at the Old Union Church (LCR 750) on Friday, March 21, 2014. Visitation will begin at the Church at 12:00 Noon, and the funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Burial will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Brad Dugan, Bill Ferris, Jace Floyd, Karl Shiflett, Mike Wolfe, T.L. Taylor, and honorary pallbearer, Lauri Anderson-Taylor. Bessie Mae Little Thomason was born October 30, 1925 to H.G. Little and May Bass Little in Schulenburg, Fayette County, Texas. Bessie, known as “Bess” to her family and friends, grew up in the area around Schulenberg and Weimar, Texas. She had one sibling, a brother, Edmund Grady Little, formerly of California, who predeceased her. Bess Thomason graduated from Weimar High School in 1943. After High School, she attended the Texas State College for Women which is now know as Texas Women’s University, in Denton, Texas. She graduated on June 2, 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. On July 11, 1953, Bess married Troy Merle Thomason. From 1947 to 1948, she worked for Humble Oil Company. She later held the position of City of Weimar Tax Assessor from 1960-1964. She also worked as the administrator of Youens Memorial Hospital during this period. She had one child, James Wallace Thomason, who was born on September 30, 1957. The Thomason’s moved to Groesbeck in 1968. During that time, Bess worked as Medical Records Librarian at South Limestone Medical Center. Bess Thomason was a person with a variety of interests. She loved fishing for bass in her farm ponds and shooting pool. She also loved certain sports, being an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers and tennis. She played tennis in her earlier years and was quite a fan of professional women’s tennis. Her favorite players were Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova and guests to her home will remember how much she enjoyed watching tennis on television and never missed Wimbledon or the U. S. Open. Bess Thomason also enjoyed traveling, particularly to favorite spots in the United States like Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. She also made three memorable trips to Europe. On December 5, 2002, her husband Troy Thomason died. Bess remained in Groesbeck until 2006 when she moved to Round Rock to be near her son James. She stayed active throughout her life, still going on daily walks until late last year. At age 88, her health began to fail, and she died on March 13, 2014 at her home at Parkwood Meadows in Round Rock, Texas. She is survived by her son James Thomason, of Round Rock.
