Joe Gilbert "Huck" Hughes, of Old Union, passed away Monday, August 24, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, at age 67. Visitation will held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the Old Union Church of Christ (beside the cemetery), with Reverend Bill Sutton officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Trent Long, Joe Raborn, Scott Green, Keven Hughes, Chris Meredith, and Mika Morgan. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Dean Lenamond and Buddy Cobb. Joe ( “Huck”) was born at Old Union on August 12, 1942, to John Gilbert Hughes and Ruby Madelle Engram Hughes, who have preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of the Old Union community, living in the same house all his life. He graduated from Groesbeck High School. "Huck" started working for the Limestone County Road and Bridge Department on May 3, 1974, and retired on July 31, 1998. He loved hunting and fishing and all outdoor sports, and was a big knife collector. He raised cattle and especially loved his many pets. Huck was generous to a fault, and a friend to everyone. He will be truly missed by all his family, friends, and at the stores in Groesbeck where he was a frequent visitor. He is survived by his companion, Patsy Henderson of Teague; brother-in-law and sister, Mickey and Pat Green of Old Union; brother and sister-in-law, Elbert and Alma Hughes of Oletha; brother-in-law and sister, Harold and Polly Bumpurs of Groesbeck; brother and sister-in-law, Ulmer and Mary Hughes of Old Union; brother-in-law and sister, Clifford and Linda Meredith of Groesbeck; ten nieces and nephews; and 10 great nieces and nephews.
