Dr. Joe Edd Mitchell, age 82, of Kosse, Texas, died in Groesbeck on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, February 5, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Kosse, with interment at Kosse Cemetery following the service. Joe was born September 7, 1927 in Kosse, Texas, to parents Edgar and Clara Johnson Mitchell. His lifelong passion was education and fostering a love of learning in his students. He worked in the public school system as a teacher and administrator. He was a professor of Education and Humanities at Texas Wesleyan University from 1960 until his retirement in 1991. He was Professor Emeritus of the School of Education at Texas Wesleyan and served in a part time teaching capacity from 1992 until 2001. He also served as Dean of Students. For most of his career, Joe worked to preserve the institutional memory and traditions of Texas Wesleyan University. In the Spring 1999 issue of Wesleyan magazine, Joe published an article entitled "A Personal Recollection." In the article, he remembered the struggles and triumphs of all those who helped build up the School of Education at Texas Wesleyan. Joe is survived by his sister, Doris Foshee; nephew, Jack Foshee and wife Ginger; aunt, Kathryn Swinnea, all of Kosse; several cousins and many wonderful friends and colleagues.
