Visitation will be Saturday, October 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, and also 1:00 Sunday before the services. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Larry Wilson and Brother Gene Fambrough of the Davis Chapel Church of Christ will officiate, and burial will follow in Cobb Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Bates, Billy Bates, Quest Bates-Marschall, Hawk Bates-Marschall, Keith Marschall, and Bill Neason; Bill Sadler was an honorary pallbearer. Kay was born on November 15, 1943 to A.D. “Bud” Bates and Ollie Birdie Dryman Bates in Cotulla, Texas. When she was three weeks old, her family moved back to Thornton, Texas where her parents and sisters were from. Kay was a darling little girl and had long brunette ringlets. Her mother made all her clothes and made sure she had a new dress for every occasion, and a costume for every school play! Kay attended Thornton schools until she was a senior, and graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1962. After graduation, she moved to Corpus Christi for a year and lived with her sister, Betty, and attended business school. She returned to Thornton and found employment as an operator for the telephone company, where she worked for 22 years. Kay married Bertell Dockery and the marriage lasted 10 years. Bertell preceded her in death. Kay loved to travel, and after retirement joined the First Ladies of Groesbeck, and went on many trips with the group. In the past few years, she was a volunteer at the South Limestone Hospital and made many friends there. Kay also helped many people by staying with their older relatives and taking care of them. Kay was very kind and generous and loved people (and jewelry, shoes, and handbags!). She spoiled her nieces rotten when they were little, and she made the best grape jelly! Kay had a happy personality and was always smiling and laughing. She will be missed as the family historian, as she could remember facts and figures like no one else! She was a member of the Davis Chapel Church of Christ. Kay is survived by her two sisters, Fleta Mae Keck of San Antonio, Texas, and Betty June Rasco of Corpus Christi, Texas, 3 nephews, 2 spoiled nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and great-great-nephews and -nieces, cousins a-plenty, and many dear friends who have been so wonderful and supportive.
