Sue was born October 13, 1932, to Charlie Cobbs and Tommie (Barge) Cobbs in Wortham, as the middle child with five siblings. While her father was a sharecropper, the family moved several times. Sue was in high school at Ben Hur, until she quit school to marry.
Sue and A. W. “Buster” Sims were united in marriage on August 13, 1949, at Kennedy Lake near Personville/Fair Oaks. They made their home in several towns before moving to LaMarque when he became employed at Union Carbide in Texas City. They raised their family of two boys and a daughter in LaMarque, with Sue possibly being the first mother to “weaponize a wooden spoon” in addition to a switch (at least on the boys.) Sue raised her family in church and Buster insisted they walk across the field to be there every time the doors were open. After she had raised her family, she worked at a women’s clothing store.
When Sue’s sister, Louise, passed away in a nearby town, she made a commitment to make sure Louise’s three children were taken care of.
Sue was a good seamstress and made many of her daughter’s clothes, and even made the guys matching shirts for one occasion.
After Buster retired, they moved back to Limestone County in 1980 where they had both grown up and they made their home in Groesbeck. Her son Ronnie already lived there and son Tracy moved later. She worked for a time at Winn’s and became a widow upon the passing of Buster.
Sue loved to bake. She was called the “cookie lady” for the cookies she shared with her Groesbeck neighbor, and with her car guy, and her yard guy, and a few she kept hidden for her grandsons. She also baked other sweets (the sweeter the better) like her cinnamon rolls and cakes.
Later in her life, Sue married again to Grady Redden, a friend she had known from their third grade class at Ben Hur School. They had a few good years together before Mr. Redden passed away. Sue lived the rest of her life surrounded by her loving family.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A. W. “Buster” Sims; two sisters, Louise Pierce and Mary Dee Williams; brother, David Cobbs; second husband, Grady Redden; and nephews and other family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Claire Sims of Groesbeck; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Debbie Sims of Groesbeck; and daughter, Connie Sims Parker of New Blaine, Arkansas.
Her grandchildren and their spouses are: Kaleb and Dori Sims, Joshua and Jennifer Sims, Colter Parker, Jessie Sims Byrd and Chris, Hannah Sims Godsoe and Michael, Anthony and Stephanie Farris, and Amanda Farris.
The great grandchildren are: Ava Sims, Katelyn Sims, Jude Sims, Georgia Sims, Clara Sims, Andrea Godsoe, Josey Godsoe, Aurora Byrd, and Kylee Byrd.
She is also survived by two sisters, Tommie Faye Sims and Charlicy Dunlap and nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation for the workers at Groesbeck LTC and AccentCare Hospice for their services and care for their mother, Annie Sue.
