His classmate and life-long friend, Marcus Ray Hanna remembers Smity as happy and laughing and that he occasionally brought a guitar with him and played it at school. He continued to enjoy playing his guitar all his life.
George served in the U. S. Army from 1965 until honorably discharged in 1967.
He was married to Brenda Gail Miller from Mexia, and they had two children, Laura and George Jr. Smity worked for Hobbs Bonded Fibers in Groesbeck and in Mexia and then worked many years as a pumper for Brown Oil and Gas in Mexia. Later he moved to Bellmead and worked for Lindsey Construction operating heavy equipment and at Plantation Foods.
Smity enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time, although his life was mostly work-work-work and spending time with the family. He was a member of the Baptist church. After health problems, his daughter Laura took care of him for many years, and then he resided in a nursing home in Bellmead before moving to Lake Shore in Waco for the last few years.
