Joey was born September 1, 1971, in Groesbeck, where he grew up and attended school. He had always loved music and as a teenager, he was in a group named “The King’s Ambassadors.”
Joey worked for thirty years in optical field in various towns. Then he owned his lawn service business, working in a large area from Lake Limestone to Waco and Killeen. He was a singer and wrote poems and songs, with many being inspired while he was on the lawn mower.
Joey was united in marriage with Rhonda Melinda Cooper on March 24, 2023 in Mexia, and they made their home in Groesbeck.
He loved his wife, Melinda, his kids, his mother, brothers and sister, his nieces and nephews, and friends. But most of all, he loved his God. He loved to go to church, to preach, sing, and write songs. He had previously pastored in Kosse and at his home and currently ministered at New Day Family Fellowship in Waco.
Joey’s love for singing included singing in church, with family at home, privately on his mower, and publicly singing Karokee on Saturday nights at the Tacqueria in Mexia and Mookie’s Place in Coolidge.
He played the piano and keyboard and wrote many gospel and country songs, including words and music, with some of the family favorites being “Big Bill”, “I Ain’t Wasting No More Time”, and “Mama, I Miss You.” He had some songs on TikTok and had plans to get some recordings made in the next couple of years. Joey is greatly loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Joey was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Glen Garrett; his brother Dennis Garrett; and his dad, Richard Willett.
He is survived by his wife, Melinda Magouirk; children, Justin Magouirk, Brittany Johnston, Seth Hutchins, Jayden Hambrick, Alayna Magouirk and Jordan Magouirk; his mother, Mary Willett; brothers Steven Willett and Tommy Garrett; sister, Laurie Seymore; also, his aunt and uncle, Rodney and Nettie Willett and aunt, Jewel Bozeman; nephews, nieces, cousins and a lot of friends.
THE SILENT FIGHT
by his son, Seth Hutchins
A heart in need, a stuttering, fading beat,
Your heart, Dad, struggles, oh so incomplete.
Each precious pulse, a whisper, almost gone,
A flicker of life, hanging on and on.
You lie so still, a warrior worn and frail,
A battle waged, where strength begins to fail.
The machines surround, a lifeline, thin and frail,
A silent vigil, where hope starts to pale.
Your breath, a whisper, a struggle to retain,
A flicker of courage, amidst the pouring rain.
We watch and wait, our hearts both clenched and tight,
Each passing moment, a desperate, silent fight.
Your spirit lingers, though your body cries,
A father's love, reflected in our eyes,
Tears we can't hold back, a silent, painful stream,
Yet hope remains, a fragile, whispered dream.
We hold your hand, so fragile and so cold,
And pray for strength, a story to unfold.
The monitor beeps, a fragile, fading sound,
Your heart, Dad, whispers, barely beating 'round.
But love remains, a constant, burning flame,
And though the darkness comes, we call your name.
Your heart, so weary, starts to find its might,
A stronger rhythm, breaking through the night.
We won't give up, we'll hold on tight and pray,
For a miracle, to brighten this dark day.
