Larry Douglas Bensen

April 19, 1947 — October 30, 2023

Groesbeck

Larry Douglas Bensen, of Groesbeck, passed away at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple on Monday, October 30, 2023, at age 76.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in Faulkenberry Cemetery, with Pastor Jon Honea officiating.

Larry was born April 19, 1947, to Adrian Nester Bensen and Twila Evelyn (Severson) Bensen in Vermillion, South Dakota.

Larry served two years in the U. S. Army, stationed in Alaska and was a cook.  Larry had three jobs in his lifetime, and retired from two – GTE and AT&T.  He enjoyed NASCAR races, UFC fights, football, ice cream and Bud Light.

Larry was married to his “bride”, Donna Louise Bensen, for nearly thirty-six years.  They loved growing old together and watching their grandkids have babies, and they watched the great grandkids any time they were needed.

Towards the end of their time together, Larry tended to Donna’s every need and never left her side for the last few years of her life.   After her passing in 2018, he rekindled his love for motorcycles and the open road.  Making up for lost time, he made many trips with his kids, Scott and Kim, grandkids, and close friend and former wife, Gail Walters.   Larry was a man with a great humor, who made “light” of every situation, even during his final stay in the hospital.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his “bride” of almost 36 years, Donna Louise Bensen who passed away February 7, 2018; two stepsons, David Wurtz and Rick Wurtz, and nephew, Ricky Wurtz.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Laura Bensen of Yukon, OK; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Alan Kaplan of Alta Loma, CA; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Debbie and Tim Brewer of Groesbeck, TX; and 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.  He also is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Linda Bensen of Azusa, CA; and four sisters, Shelly Wurtz of Glendora, CA, Shirley Beaver of Phoenix, AZ, Sharon Aldag of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Sheila Gray of Klamoth Falls, OR; and many nieces and nephews.
