Margarette Jones

Margarette Louise Garner Jones died peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2024. She was 92.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11 am at the Old Union Church of Christ in Limestone County, Texas.

Margarette was born to James and Emma Garner on May 18, 1932, in Waco, Texas. 

Margarette's faith was a cornerstone of her life, as she was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. She also took pride in her education, attending and graduating from Freeport High School. During her time there, she was a drill team member and earned the nickname “Legs” from one of her classmates. She cherished attending her high school reunions over the years, a testament to her enduring friendships and fond memories.

In the 1950s, Margarette was not one to conform to traditional gender roles. While her husband Doug pursued his education at Texas A&M, Margarette was employed by a professor, where she typed numerous theses for college students. Her dedication and skills even led her to work for a year with the renowned Paul “Bear” Bryant.

After moving to Houston, Margarette's artistic skills found a new outlet in floral arranging. She served as the President of the Far Corners Garden Club and was an active member of the Houston Garden Club, where she taught and designed arrangements for many young women. Later, she turned her design skills into a successful business, opening two dress shops in the Memorial area of Houston. 

Margarette was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Douglas Jones, her son Charles Douglas Jones, and her three younger sisters, Joyce, Sandra, and Jean. She is survived by her son, David Harold Jones.
