Richard Douglas “Rick” Herndon, of Groesbeck, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the age of 76.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the Prairie Grove Baptist Churh (2678 FM 1953, Mexia, TX.)
Rick was born May 16, 1947, to Roland Herndon and Frances Nadine (Weatherford) Herndon in Liberty. He graduated from Liberty High School in the Class of 1965, at the same time his high school sweetheart, Virginia Christine Proctor, was graduating “across the river” at Dayton High School.
Rick and Christine were united in marriage on March 31, 1967, in Dayton, and two weeks later he was enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. The couple moved to California where they lived the next two years. Rick was then shipped out to Saigon, Vietnam. He worked in Supply at the air base and transported supplies to other bases. Rick was honorably discharged in 1971, after completing four years, and moved back to Dayton where Christine was waiting for him.
Rick attended Lee College in Baytown for two years, studying computers and he worked for his Dad, until beginning his career with Diamond Shamrock in Green’s Bayou. The family lived in Liberty, where they raised their son, and Rick commuted to Houston for the next twenty-eight years, for the same company that changed names seven times, and was Green’s Bayou Syngenta when he retired.
Rick loved to hunt and fish and was a member of Bravo Bass Club. One of the fishing tournaments he attended was at Lake Limestone. Although he and Christine had property at Toleda Bend, they decided to move to Lake Limestone for their retirement home in 2001. They both loved fishing from their pier or boat at the home on the lake.
Rick was a member of the Prairie Grove Baptist Church and he served as a deacon, and also loved to sing in the Choir. Rick and Christine were blessed to have their son, Jay Michael Herndon living with them and Jay also was active in the church and choir. Rick was known for always smiling and for his loving character. He and Christine had fifty-six plus years together.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, H.M. Proctor; mother-in-law and step father-in-law, Ida T. and E. E. “Buster” Cost; and brothers-in-law, Curtis Proctor, Royce Proctor and Cecil Hoffpauir.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Herndon; son, Jay Michael Herndon; daughter-in-law, Heather Herndon; twin granddaughters, Kylie Herndon and Kaci Herndon; brother and sister-in-law, Gary Wayne and Dianna Herndon; sister-in-law, Carolyn Jane Hoffpauir; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Sandy Proctor; and nieces and nephews.
